What products should I be using for the best sun protection?

When it comes to sun protection, there are two types of sunscreen to choose from, Chemical and Physical sunscreen. For oily, acne prone skin or for people with rosacea the best bet is Physical sunscreen which contains active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting harmful UV rays. Chemical sunscreen contains organic compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin. The Chemical sunscreen doesn’t rub off or rinse off as easily as the Physical sunscreen but can really sting if it drips into your eyes!!

How much SPF do I need?

Both sunscreens should be used in conjunction with wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and any shade you can find. DO NOT rely on the SPF in your makeup to protect you during an active day in the sun!Reapplying is incredibly important. This is the south, and there are numerous factors, including humidity, sweating, and contact with water, which can change the overall effectiveness of sunscreen. Therefore, reapply every hour if you can, especially if you’re on the beach or being active.

How do I keep my skin hydrated in this heat?

Keeping your skin hydrated during the summer heat wave starts from the inside. Drink plenty of water and steer clear of foods high in sodium. Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells so skin can breathe and promotes blood circulation. Use a moisturizer day and night, I especially love Grown Alchemist’s Matte Balancing moisturizer, which keeps the face from feeling greasy while still keeping skin hydrated.

Which foundations are the most sweat proof?

Best foundation for sweaty skin? Hands down Ilia’s Vivid Foundation, it offers a natural solution to reduce pore size, shine and contains anti-bacterial properties. The medicinal resin is able to be incorporated into skin care as a natural mattifying skin refiner.

What’s an important skin care tip most people miss?

An important skin care tip that people generally don’t know about is the importance of a topical vitamin c or antioxidant. Treating your skin with an antioxidant prevents wrinkles and discoloration. Vitamin C blocks against FREE RADICALS, this is so important, free radicals found in environmental pollution and even our diet, attack our skin cells and break down our collagen. This causes wrinkles, volume loss, and brown spots.

Your favorite makeup trend this summer?

Without a doubt, my favorite makeup trend is ORGANIC makeup!! Hallelujah for a healthy ingredients, cruelty-free and environmentally friendly makeup lines. This is why I carry RMS Beauty and Ilia makeup. Another thing I have been admiring lately is the “less is more” approach to makeup application. I’m SO over contouring!!! I want to see your freckles, I want to see your skin, I want to know the true shapes of your cheek bones, of your nose. I believe in highlighting and enhancing your features not covering them up. We’re all flawed, unique and beautiful in our own right.

If I only have two minutes to spend on my skin a day, how should I be using them?

So you’ve got 2 minutes for your skin?? Wash with a Clarisonic, dry, wipe your face with a glycolic peel pad such as those from Cane + Austin (glycolic acid is derived from sugar, it’s an exfoliant, and it breaks down dead skin) and moisturize. If it’s daytime use a moisturizer with sunblock, in the evening use an eye cream and or serum full of peptides and nutrients.

How do I get lip protection without ruining my color?

If you’re trying to protect your lips while maintaining color opt for a lip color such as RMS lip shine, this combines nourishing organic oils and pure mineral pigments, which is highly emollient and visibly hydrating. Also layering a lip balm with SPF a few minutes before lipstick application will help prevent future sun damage.

What’s your favorite product in the shop right now?

Wow, my favorite product from The Rosy Cheek? That’s a toughie, I curated all of our goods to meet high ethical standards with the best of the best ingredients. At the moment, I can’t get enough of Moon Juices, Action Dust. It’s an alchemized potion made with elite, wildcrafted herbs. “An adaptogenic elixir to maintain healthy systems for superior states of cognitive flow, clarity, memory, creativity, alertness and a capacity to handle stress.” You mix this “dust” into a smoothie, nut milk, or even tea. It’s not yet available anywhere in Florida. The line of Dusts ranging from Beauty Dust to Spirit Dust was created in Venice Beach, California by a young female entrepreneur and can be found in places such as The Beverly Hills Ace hotel. (I love telling people that) I believe in the healing power of Chinese herbs and medicinal wildcrafted ingredients.

What waterproof makeup is most important this summer?

The best waterproof makeup has got to be mascara; you need to be able to sweat, swim and exercise without looking like a raccoon!! If you have scrawny little eyebrows like me, you may also want to consider a waterproof brow pencil, because believe me, I’m riding that eyebrow trend as far as it can go!
